I’m seeing what the products of reduced or eliminated entrance test standards are producing and I’m not impressed. Now expecting perfection from people isn’t something anyone should do. But if your out of shape to the point you get tired doing mail call then maybe working in corrections isn’t the best place for you. Or your coworkers for that point. Plus we all know common sense isn’t so common so that arguement is dead as well. ... full thread

Oregon: The "Texas Model" Under Fire

Right on Crime’s efforts in Oregon illustrate the coalition’s efforts to promote criminal justice reform.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber (D) issued a July 2011 executive order establishing a Commission on Public Safety (CPS) charged with reviewing sentencing policies and recommending reforms. A news release announcing the commission’s members said the state’s “sentencing structure,” determined by legislation and ballot measures, created an “inconsistent” approach to criminal justice in Oregon.

Voters had passed Measure 11 in 1994 that established mandatory minimum sentencing primarily for violent crimes, placing more discretion with prosecutors and removing it from judges. Measure 57’s passage in 2008 set mandatory minimums for non-violent offenders. ... full story
