LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Department of Corrections plans to end its lease at a small Little Rock facility in order to transfer prisoners and staff members to a refurbished unit in Pine Bluff. The department began renting space from the county for as many as 175 prisoners at the Wrightsville satellite unit in 2014, for $1 per year. That unit, an outbuilding of the Pulaski County jail, is about 12 miles from the Wrightsville state prison, according to The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (http://bit.ly/2gxVwhI ). The state intends to terminate the lease within 90 days. Prison spokesman Solomon Graves said the department plans to end operations at the facility by March 1, and reassign corrections officers to the Barbara Ester Unit near department headquarters in Pine Bluff. Graves said there aren't enough officers to staff both facilities, and the department doesn't have the authority to hire more. The Ester Unit, which is still partially under construction, began housing inmates in 2015. It's expected to hold 580 inmates in 2017. Read More. |
