| State sponsors de-escalation training for officers |

Being able to keep people calm is an important skill, especially if you work in a prison. It’s one reason why the Alaska Department of Corrections is sponsoring a four-day training in Palmer, where corrections officials and other law enforcement officers are learning to use their words instead of their weapons. The state is paying a Milwaukee company called Vistelar $40,000 to conduct the training. The company specializes in teaching people communication skills to de-escalate violent situations or keep them from going bad in the first place. Greg Stocker trains Alaska probation officers.
