State sponsors de-escalation training for officers

Being able to keep people calm is an important skill, especially if you work in a prison. It’s one reason why the Alaska Department of Corrections is sponsoring a four-day training in Palmer, where corrections officials and other law enforcement officers are learning to use their words instead of their weapons.

The state is paying a Milwaukee company called Vistelar $40,000 to conduct the training. The company specializes in teaching people communication skills to de-escalate violent situations or keep them from going bad in the first place.

Greg Stocker trains Alaska probation officers. He said many of the skills are familiar but they’re easy to forget when things aren’t going well.
