AL Dept. of Corrections agrees to 15-point suicide prevention plan |

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Southern Poverty Law Center confirmed late Thursday evening that an agreement has been reached with the Alabama Department of Corrections regarding suicide prevention measures. Federal Judge Myron Thompson has ordered the ADOC to immediately take action to protect suicidal prisoners through a 15-point plan. The agreement comes after an SPLC client committed suicide in his prison cell just days after testifying in a federal court trial about the State of Alabama's inadequate mental health care for prisoners. “This is a step in the right direction, but it is not a permanent fix,” said Maria Morris, SPLC senior supervising attorney. “It will get us through the next 60 days, but the Alabama Department of Corrections needs to create a meaningful, long-term plan to address these issues, which is one of the reasons we originally filed this lawsuit.” Read More. |
