First 10 offenders arrive at Kewanee correctional facility

Ten inmates from Illinois prisons took their first step toward a new life Thursday.

They were the first offenders to be transported to the Kewanee Life Skills Re-Entry Center.

The Kewanee facility has been converted from the Illinois Youth Center-Kewanee to a place where offenders can learn what they need to know to live successfully outside prison. The aim is to reduce the number of offenders who commit crimes after they leave prison and are incarcerated again.

Tony Williams, warden of the Kewanee facility, said the number of offenders here will grow, but at this point, "We want to start slow and build our way up."

The new residents of the Kewanee facility will spend their first few days getting oriented and acclimated to their new home. Programming for the offenders is to start the week of March 6, Williams said. The programming will include education, behavioral therapy, life skills training and "getting them de-institutionalized," Williams said.
