DOC working to fill prison vacancies

There’s one thing the Maryland Division of Corrections and its correctional officers’ union can agree on — staffing levels are an issue.

With 981 vacant positions as of Jan. 1, the division is trying to recruit more officers to fill the floors of its 29 facilities scattered throughout the state. A budget analysis submitted to the Maryland General Assembly shows the vacancy rate spiked from 2 percent in 2013 to 13.9 percent presently.

More proactive recruiting, such as the upcoming career fair hosted by the division in Salisbury, is part of getting “good people to come work for us,” said Stephen T. Moyer, secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The career exposition in Salisbury will be held Saturday, April 1, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Salisbury Art Space located at 212 W. Main Street.

The secretary said he was appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan in 2015 to root out corruption in the prison system. Off the bat, Moyer said he was briefed about the federal investigation into drug distribution at the Eastern Correctional Institution, which he called "a shock to a lot of people on the Eastern Shore." While getting out the bad apples is still an ongoing task, screening candidates to fill the slots prevents them being there in the first place, according to Moyer.
