JACKSON, MI - A 23-year-old inmate at the Cooper Street Correctional Facility cut himself on razor wire several times while attempting to scale a prison fence Saturday afternoon. While other inmates were spending time out in the yard of the Jackson facility's low-security housing area at about 5:45 p.m., June 17, the 23-year-old went behind a housing unit and began climbing the fence, said Michigan Department of Corrections Spokesman Chris Gautz. Sensors built into the fence alerted correctional officers to the escape attempt as soon as the inmate touched the fence, Gautz said. The man climbed to the top of the fence and fell off as soon as he touched the sharp razor wire lining the top. He made two more failed attempts to scale the fence before he was surrounded by correctional officers who used a stun gun on him and took him into custody, Gautz said. Read More. |
