One county jail inmate tests positive for tuberculosis

An inmate at the Monterey County Jail has tested positive for tuberculosis, meaning other inmates and staff may have been exposed, as well as members of the public attending court hearings.

As a result, jail staff and inmates are being tested for TB, Cmdr. John Thornburg says.

He expects the Monterey County Health Department to notify members of the public who might also have been exposed to the TB bacteria in Monterey County Superior Court on certain days.

TB is a disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which usually attack the lungs, but can attack any part of the body including the kidneys, spine, and brain, according to the Health Department.
