Coroner: Inmate died of natural causes

A man who died less than a month after being shot by police died from natural causes, the Allen County coroner said Thursday.

Jeffrey D. Jones Sr., 53, died Nov. 16. On Oct. 27, a Fort Wayne police officer investigating a domestic dispute shot Jones.

He was transported Nov. 15 from the Allen County Jail to a hospital after suffering a medical event, the coroner's report said. He died of natural causes attributed to hypertensive heart disease and cardiac arrest, the coroner's report said.

It was about 4:30 p.m. Oct. 27 when police responded to a 911 call from Jones' wife, who said he was armed and threatening her at their home on Elmdale Drive near Hessen Cassel and Paulding roads. Officers Sage Knopp, James Spangle and Gavin Dambra arrived and, after a cordial introduction, were overpowered by Jones, Allen County Prosecutor Karen Richards said.
