GALESBURG — The Knox County jail is renewing its license to continue offering an online GED program to inmates.
That GED preparation program uses iPathways software, developed by the Center for Application of Information Technologies, or CAIT, a non-profit organization based at Western Illinois University in Macomb. The jail pays a yearly licensing fee of $2,000 out of the inmate account, which collects a commission from each inmate’s purchase of commissary items.
The online GED program allows inmates to pursue education to prepare themselves for each of the four aspects of the GED — math, science, language arts and social studies. Further, the program is also utilized by the Illinois Department of Corrections so if a person begins it in Knox County and later receives a prison sentence, they can continue their work.
