| Child Predator and Virginia Department of Corrections 'Most Wanted' Fugitive Arrested After 18 Years on the Run |

Richmond, VA - In the early morning hours of July 3, the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force in Los Angeles, California arrested a man who absconded from probation in Virginia nearly 18 years ago. William Branson Martin was wanted for absconding from probation stemming from a 1989 conviction of sexual assault of three young girls in Isle of Wight, Virginia. Martin received a 20 year prison sentence with 10 years suspended along with 20 years of probation. In February of 2000, only eight months after his release from prison, Martin disappeared off of law enforcements radar and had been on the run ever since. After years of extensive investigations by the Virginia Department of Corrections and United States Marshals, information was eventually generated that Martin had been living in a homeless shelter in Los Angeles, California. The Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force in Richmond requested the assistance of the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force in Los Angeles in an attempt to locate and arrest Martin. At approximately 7:00 a.m. task force members converged on a homeless shelter in the 8100 block of South West Avenue in Los Angeles, California and apprehended Martin without incident. Martin is currently awaiting extradition back to Virginia. “The apprehension of this fugitive is a direct result of the perseverance of our investigators and interagency cooperation that exists on our fugitive task forces,” said U.S. Marshal Robert Mathieson. The USMS Regional Fugitive Task Force in Richmond consists of investigators from the U.S. Marshals Service, Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Corrections, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Chesterfield and Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office and the Richmond, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights and Hopewell Police Departments.
