| CDCR Investigating Riots at Two State Prisons |

SACRAMENTO — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is investigating two separate mass disturbances that occurred today at Pleasant Valley and Avenal State Prisons. The riots sent a total of 11 inmates to outside hospitals for treatment. The first incident occurred at 12:36 p.m. involving 134 inmates at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga. Staff quelled the incident quickly by using OC Pepper Spray and non-lethal weapons to bring both incidents under control. Five inmates were rushed to local hospitals and seven others were being evaluated in the prison’s medical clinic. The extent of their injuries is not known. CDCR staff discovered many inmate manufactured weapons used in the incident. Around 1 p.m., a riot broke out at Avenal State Prison involving around 80 inmates. Staff responded immediately, and quelled the incident within minutes. Six inmates were taken to local hospitals with unknown injuries. There were no staff injuries in either incident. The cause of the riots is unknown, and inmate movement has been limited in both prisons to facilitate the investigation into this matter. Avenal State Prison houses around 4,300 general population inmates and provides re-entry programming to prepare inmates for parole and their eventual return to the community. Pleasant Valley State Prison houses about 3,200 general population inmates and offers education and vocational skills and self-help programs. |
