Transportation of released inmates a concern for Northumberland County Prison Board

SUNBURY — Some inmates being released from Northumberland County Prison do not have transportation away from the facility.

The Coal Township site is located approximately five miles away from Shamokin, surrounded mostly by trees. At Wednesday's public meeting, prison board members discussed the issue, a conversation prompted by the theft of a correctional officer's truck by a former inmate at the facility Dec. 15.

County President Judge Charles Saylor, also the board chair, encouraged the prison and probation departments to "make the best effort you can so they have the means other than just walking.

"As long as there's some recognition or concerted effort to put pressure on the individual that they're not going to be walking through the campus or the woods upon their release," Saylor said.

Warden Bruce Kovach said inmates can arrange for transportation from family or friends or call for public transportation from the Valley's cab companies, or sometimes volunteers from churches provide transportation. Some inmates have money leftover in their accounts which is returned to them on a debit MasterCard honored by local cab companies.
