Almost walked out with my OC can once. Caught myself standing in line at the time clock. Could of been bad, at the time I lived over an hour away from the prison where I was working.

Took escort keys with me to the locker room, when I took off the duty belt had to make a trip up to the Sgts office. Of course he wasn’t there.

I have taken inmate’s ID cards home before, and handcuffs a couple of times.

Our policy was that contraband had to be logged for a report then it followed the chain of evidence (drugs, weapons, etc.) so the officer that found it got a number for evidence, placed in an evidence locker and secured for an evidence technician. Meds, unknown pills were taken to the nurse for identification then destroyed. Inmates who hoarded meds were usually dropped from all meds by the physician. We got in the habit of either putting the contraband in a plastic bag or inside a clean plastic glove to preserve it.

I learned early in my career to always pat myself down before leaving work. We have a couple of dirty Supervisors who, if they didn’t like you, might drop something in your coat pocket. I checked my belt for keys, cuffs and OC then check each pocket including shirt pockets. Did this everyday. Once you start, after a few weeks, it becomes a habit. Only takes about 3 or 4 minutes to complete.

Okay I have a bad habit. I tend to accidentally take home contraband in my pocket at times. Well while shaking down if I find something I put it in my pocket unless it can cut or stab me. Over the years I have brought a few really interesting items home. The best item I have brought home was a cigarette case. This case was made out of match sticks. When you pulled down on the very bottom of it a inch and a half wide piece of sharpened metal that came to a point that was 3 inches long was built into it. I found it fit well between my middle and ring finger when I clenched my fist. I honestly just thought it was just i cigarette case if I had known that inmate would of been in a world of hurt. So what fun things do you all find in the pockets lint trap in the dryer. Heck even in the shake downs.
