Be honest and be normal. Don’t wear a military uniform, don’t stand at attention and yell Semper Fi, don’t talk like a robot, and remember, the inmates are not the “enemy” and you do not engage them or eliminate them. Smile, and show that you are firm, but you are human. I have been a CO now for two agencies, and believe me, if you have a law abiding past, good work history, no substance or alcohol problems, and you are able to perform, mentally and physically you should be alright. Some agencies give more authority and duties than others. Some want you to stand around for 8 hours and open doors and relay information, others may have you make arrests, write reports, go hands-on, transport, deal with the public, testify in court, enforce laws and policy, counsel inmates, learn and use several tools for use of force, and the list goes on. Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys I didn’t get called in for the interview this week but I’m hoping that they will give me a call next week. By the way I am the original poster but this site wouldn’t allow me to log in so I had to re-register.

The main thing they will be looking for is your common sense and judgement. Being in the military is definitely a plus. You already know discipline and how to obey orders. Granted working for DOP isn’t the same as being a Marine but some of the basics apply. Don’t come in seeming bloodthirsy or overly violent. Firm and consistent are important buzzwords to remember. Good luck and if you are interviewing in NC contact me. I am a Sgt here and can give you additional advice if you need it. Semper Fi.

Firstly be truthful in your answers. But don’t be extreme in either direction.(Too Liberal or Conservative). Being in the Military will help you a great deal. Remember you are Joining a Disciplined Organization. With ranks and structures not dissimilar to the Military (but not as Strict). What they are looking for is Are you a Team Player. Can you handle Responsibility, Have you got Common Sense. Can you cope in stressful situations. Can you Think on your Feet. These are the type of things they are looking for. Many that do not understand what we do think that we just stand around all day holding keys. This Job is as much if not more psychological as physical. Because you will be dealing with the Mad the Bad and the Downright Devious. So best of Luck with the interview.

I recently got out of the Marines and I am wanting to start a carrer as a correctional officer. I have an interview at a prison next week. I would greatly appriciate some insight on what kind of questions I might be asked, and what kind of responses that I’m expected to give. I’m worried that I might come off sounding to ( yes sir, no sir). Military life is all that I have known for the past 4 years and I don’t want the interview board to think that I have no personality or that I am a little too agressive for the job.
