| Dept. of Corrections sees success at halfway houses |

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) The walkaway rate for halfway house residents statewide has dropped dramatically as a result of sweeping changes from the Department of Corrections. Those changes are being seen first hand at the Cordova Center, the states largest half-way house providing housing and transitional services to non-violent offenders. The reason for change comes as a result of SB-91, the crime bill that was signed into law last July meant to reduce the states prison population, recidivism and cost. In the first six months of 2016, 117 walkaways were reported in the city of Anchorage, 59 came from Cordova Center. In the six months that followed, walkaways dropped to 39 across Anchorage, with 25 occurring at the Cordova Center. Read More. |
