FOLSOM- California State Prison, Sacramento (CSP-SAC) officials are investigating an attempted homicide incident in which two correctional officers were stabbed by an inmate.

On July 13 just after 11 a.m., officers were releasing the incarcerated population on Facility B to yard recreation.

Inmate Michael Harris exited the housing unit and as an officer was scanning him with a metal detector, Harris used an inmate-manufactured weapon to stab the officer in the head and neck. A second officer sustained a stab wound to the right tricep. Responding officers used physical force to quell the incident.

Responding staff summoned an ambulance for the injured officers who were transported to an area hospital for treatment. One officer was treated and released. Conditions for the other officers are unknown but are not believed to be life threatening.

Officers recovered one inmate-manufactured weapon at the scene measuring approximately seven inches long and approximately three-quarters of an inch wide. A third officer was transported to an area hospital for a hand injury.

Harris sustained minor injuries during the incident and was transported to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Harris will be retained in segregated housing pending an investigation into the incident. Movement on Facility B has been limited to facilitate the investigation.

The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is assisting CSP-SAC’s Investigative Services Unit. The Office of the Inspector General has been notified. Harris was received by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on Nov. 2, 2009 from Los Angeles County to serve a life without the possibility of parole sentence for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury/death.

Activated in 1986, CSP-SAC is a high-security prison that houses more than 2,300 inmates and employs about 1,700 people. The institution houses long-term inmates, inmates requiring specialized mental health programming, and inmates with high-risk medical concerns.
